"I said to myself at the Festival in Roermond in 1968 that I would try it again with music for one year. And I'm still stuck in this year ... " Jasper van't Hof liked this quote from his portrait in the series" European Jazz Legends" so much that he immediately shared it on Facebook after the publication of Jazz thing 108 at the beginning of April 2015. Ever since the pianist, keyboardist and composer born in Enschede, The Netherlands, in 1947 quit his apprenticeship as a textile technician in favor of jazz, i.e., around 50 years ago, he has experimented in a beautiful new world of music between hard bop, free jazz and all forms of fusion, from African grooves to European reverence. "I can only be a jazz musician, because I know nothing," he said. "I know nothing! I just have great fun playing, and I rehearse like crazy. I love my instrument, and I have ideas that I try out again and again."

On the evening of May 15, 2015, Jasper van't Hof gave a taste of his sense-seeking playfulness in a full-length concert in Theater Gütersloh, excerpts of which have now been released thanks to close collaboration with the culture radio station WDR 3. He calls the band of the evening "Oeuvre", which also features the tenor saxophonist Harry Sokal from Austria, the Dutch bassist Stefan Lievestro and the Swiss "European Jazz Legend" Fredy Studer on drums. "It's a band with people who have experienced the same as I have in Europe: fusion, free and more!”

Und ich hänge noch immer in diesem Jahr fest ...“ Dieses Zitat aus seinem Porträt in der Reihe „European Jazz Legends“ gefiel Jasper van’t Hof so gut, dass er es umgehend nach Erscheinen von Jazz thing 108 Anfang April 2015 auf Facebook teilte. Seit der 1947 im holländischen Enschede geborene Pianist, Keyboarder und Komponist seine Lehre zum Textiltechniker zu Gunsten des Jazz abbrach, also seit gut fünfzig Jahren, experimentiert er an einer schönen, neuen Musikwelt zwischen Hardbop, Free Jazz und jeglicher Art von Fusion, von afrikanischen Grooves bis zu europäischer Andacht. „Ich kann nur ein Jazzmusiker sein, weil ich nichts weiß“, sagt er. „Ich weiß nix! Ich habe nur eine Riesen-Spielfreude und ich probe wie verrückt. Ich liebe mein Instrument, ich habe Ideen, die ich versuche, versuche und noch mal versuche.“

Am Abend des 15. Mai 2015 gab Jasper van’t Hof eine Kostprobe seiner sinnsuchenden Spielfreude – in einem abendfüllenden Konzert im Theater Gütersloh, das dank einer engen Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kulturradio WDR 3 hier jetzt in Auszügen vorliegt. Die Band des Abends, außerdem mit dem Tenorsaxofonisten Harry Sokal aus Österreich, dem holländischen Bassisten Stefan Lievestro und der Schweizer „European Jazz Legend“ Fredy Studer am Schlagzeug, nennt er „Oeuvre“. „Es ist eine Band mit Leuten, die dasselbe wie ich erlebt haben in Europa: Fusion, Free und mehr!“

Jasper Van ‘t Hof, age 50, is a busy person. His life and mind turn around music in many formats in combination with a broad social and political awareness. The release of his solo-CD “Live at the Concertgebouw” (CHR70010) made us realize that Jasper is a unique person to work with. His open minded, spontaneous, explosive and demanding approach to things is characteristic of Jasper. It makes him unique both as an artist and as a person. Challenge is therefor proud to have signed an exclusive contract with Jasper to exploit his artistic skills and musical experience for a minimum of five years. “Tomorrowland” is the first fruit of this long term plan.
Jasper has travelled and performed all over the world. He can be regarded as an Ambassador for the “European” approach of jazz. There is no talented Dutch musician who can’t say they either have played or have wanted to play with Jasper. He has been much sought after and has hardly ever disappointed anyone. Therefore it is strange that he is even more famous outside of his own country. Maybe it’s because Jasper doesn’t like to be labeled and can’t be put into a specific slot. This time he likes to give us a hand: VOJ. It is a perfect reflection of Jasper van ‘t Hof - a man eager to try anything, mixing the old with the new, combining east, west, south and north, ignoring fashions and fads, and eventually coming up with music that’s as vibrant and vital as jazz is supposed to be.
In the 70’s he was part of the famous group “Pork Pie”, with guitarist Philip Catherine and tenor saxophonist Charlie Mariano. With “Pork Pie” he met J.F. Yennie-Clarke, which led to a quartet with Bob, JF and Aldo Romano. Since then he has continued to working on and off with Bob and JF.
Jasper has also worked with Archie Shepp, Kenny Wheeler, Alphonse Mouzon, Dave Friedman. JF worked with many, many legends: Keith Jarreth, Don Cherry, Gato Barbieri, Pharoah Sanders, Martial Solal, Chet Baker a.o. Bob Malach is a much in demand tenorist. Besides playing with legendary popstars like Madonna, Stevie Wonder and Steve Miller he performed with Mike Stern, Stanley Clarke, Joe Zawinul and most of the stars of today’s New York scene.
